In recent years, out-of-town shops have become more popular among the population than in-town shops. The huge discounts they provide and the large variety of items contained in these stores are some of the reasons why more people prefer them.
The expansion in population has led to a decrease in space, due to which large malls and shopping centers are now being constructed outside the city center. Many people prefer shopping in such places as they can purchase almost everything at a much cheaper price compared to shops in the city center. For example, shops like D-Mart, Walmart, and hypermarkets sell everything from kitchen utensils to clothes to electronic gadgets in one place. Many find this advantageous as they can purchase all the required items from a single place.
These shops also have a number of disadvantages. The most significant is accessibility. As these shops are on the outskirts, it takes much longer to reach. Also, only those with a car or a bike can commute easily, and people who depend on public transport find it difficult to travel to and from these shops. As they contain almost everything one needs and they sell these products at a discounted price, it affects the business of small retailers. Also, a large amount of area is required to build these shopping centers, and for that, people are filling paddy fields and agricultural lands, leading to habitat destruction. For example, a hypermarket was recently opened near my place, and for its construction, acres of agricultural land were destroyed.
Although many find out-of-town shops convenient and beneficial, considering their effect on the local economy and nature, we can conclude that their disadvantages outweigh the advantages.
