I agree with the notion that people today are becoming less active in spending their free time than in the past for two reasons. First, that technological developments have ushered in novel recreation methods, and that urban infrastructures do not support dynamic activities for people to engage in.
Due to the rapid development of technology, we are now witnessing a shift in ways people could spend their free time. Driving to the mall or a local park used to be fun, but with the advent of phones, laptops, television sets, and gaming consoles, people can now spend their free time more conveniently. In fact, finishing a favorite game, chatting through video calls, and watching movies from home are cheaper, less time consuming, and less tiring. I have personally experienced the benefits of spending more free time by doing these things as they are more accessible to me.
The second reason why people are less active today is due to unsupportive public infrastructures. Urbanization is growing at an ever-increasing rate, but cities can hardly keep up the pace. In response to the expanding population, cities are now flooded with houses and malls which usually give little attention to public spaces which encourage physical activities. This is particularly true in Tangerang where parks are being constantly replaced with new housing complex, therefore limiting my activity options.
In summary, I contend that the reason why people today are less active in spending their free time are two-fold. First, that technological developments have provided more convenient leisure activities at home. Second, that unsupportive infrastructures limit the options in which people can spend their free time more actively.
