It is widely acknowledged that the over-reliance on smartphones among ordinary people has sparked considerable attention and debate in contemporary society. While such a statement has both merits and demerits, I firmly disagree with this opinion.
Critics of the prevalence of mobile phones argue that this new technology deters individuals from interacting with others personanlly. They hold the view that a great deal of time spent on in-person communication with others is sacrificed for indulging into digital devices, thereby diminishing our ability of social skills and communication ability. This perspective has been broadly proven by cases in daily life. Take China, for instance, it is commonplace to see a child preoccupying with his mobile phone while his families are having reunion dinner and chatting with each other on special holidays.
Nevertheless, this inordinate concern is groundless. The extensive use of cellphones is certainly affect our lives but not for the worse. The declining in face-to-face interaction is triggered not by using digital devices but by waning interest in our fellow creatures or the world at large. Instead, mobile phones even assist people in preventing isolation by bringing every field of interest onto the screen. The advent of advanced apps, such as TikTock and Instagram, enables people to share opinions on common ground and thus enhancing their communication ability. Additionally, smartphones nowadays are equipped with advanced and user-friendly functions, such as the video call or online meeting room. These functions empower citizens to see and converse with their beloved ones regardless of geographical barriers. On a larger scale, our mode of communication is continuously evolving and mobile phones represent the latest approach to connect with one another. Therefore, it is more feasible and meaningful to treat smartphones as practical tools to enhance social interaction.
In a nutshell, although some remain suspicious about the implementation of digital devices, their merits far exceed the drawbacks. Their existance indeed facilitate interpersonal interaction and build a stronger social bonds.
