Band 7+: People today get less sleep than in the past. What is the cause of this? What are the possible effects of this development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent times, it has been observed that individuals get much less sleep compared to previous centuries. This trend is largely driven by the demands of modern lifestyles and the pervasive use of technology. The consequences of not getting proper sleep are far-reaching and have the potential to impact both individuals and society at large.

One of the primary reasons for the decline in sleeping hours is the work pressure people are facing. In more detail, individuals spend excessive amounts of time in workplaces, increasing from 9 hours to 12. Their desire to get promoted, meet deadlines, and increase job security leads them to stay longer hours. This contributes to a lack of time for other activities and an increased chance of getting less sleep.

Another significant cause of reduced sleep is technological advancement and its devastating effect on people. Nowadays, individuals are more likely to scroll through social media and waste their time watching videos late at night. Subconsciously, this trend has a negative influence on individuals’ sleep routines, not only causing decreased performance but also mood swings, anxiety, and a higher risk of depression. Additionally, those who are exposed to blue light frequently suffer from reduced concentration and an increased level of stress.

The effects of sleep deprivation can be severe for both individuals and society. Firstly, sleep is an essential need for human survival. Lack of sleep may result in a loss of concentration, increased stress, anxiety, and a decline in completing tasks or achieving goals. Furthermore, this development may even result in physical health issues, such as weakened immune systems and chronic conditions including heart disease or diabetes on a societal level as well.

In conclusion, the reduction in sleep is primarily caused by work pressure and the widespread use of digital services. This trend may result in increased anxiety and stress levels among people, leading to potential diseases and lack of performance.
