Band 7+: People today get less sleep than in the past. What is the cause of this? What are the possible effects of this development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

These days, many people do not get enough sleep compared to the past. The main reasons are overworking and spending time on screens, which can cause problems including health issues and shorter attention spans.

There are numerous major contributors to a growing lack of sleep in modern society. One of the significant reasons is work routine. To elaborate, many jobs require long hours which make it difficult to get enough sleep. From my experience, I have to work on my portfolio within a tight schedule, which makes me get only five hours of sleep each night. Another cause is spending time on screens. That is, spending too much time on smartphones because the fast-paced and in-real-time contents on social media can be distracting and make it hard to sleep. For example, after I come back home from school, I often spend time on social media for hours late into the night, which I believe is an attempt to make up for lost time during the day.

Consequently, lower amounts of sleep can lead to several adverse effects. A primary consequence is health issues. To clarify, lack of sleep can lead to various physical complications, such as fatigue, lethargy, heart disease, diabetes, to name a few. Personally, when I do not get enough sleep, I often feel tired and doze off in the daytime. Another problem can be shorter attention spans. That is, not getting enough sleep makes it challenging to pay attention and focus. For example, I struggle to concentrate in class when I get less than eight hours of sleep, resulting in poor academic performance.

In conclusion, from my perspective, the key drivers of insomnia are work habits and too much time on smartphones, which can give rise to several issues including health problems and shorter attention spans.
