Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 9: People today increasingly use credit cards to make monthly purchases. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The rise of credit card usage for everyday expenses has become prevalent in contemporary society. Although this trend can offer some drawbacks, its benefits are weightier.

On the one hand, there are still some drawbacks to having credit cards. Firstly, the potential for overspending is one major problem with credit cardholders. This is because the ease of using credit can make individuals make impulsive purchases, often beyond their financial means. Resultantly, this behavior can result in accumulating debt, which may become difficult to manage, leading to financial strain and stress. Moreover, credit cards are often targets for scams. The main reason is that many people carelessly share information that might be answers to their security questions, including their relatives’ names or the model of their first car, which makes scammers’ jobs easier.

On the other hand, having a credit card guarantees numerous benefits for individuals. Indeed, it reduces cash usage, which means more convenience for people. For example, cardholders conveniently do not have to carry around lots of cash, which means that they are at a lower risk of being robbed. Furthermore, each bank has its own credit card; they offer various unique features to appeal to their customers. A perfect example is that most credit cards currently have a cashback or reward program. Consequently, the reward points can sometimes be converted to free trips or hotel bookings, leading to saving money for consumers.

In conclusion, although the misuse of credit cards can bring about inherent risks, the advantages of using them are far more impactful. Furthermore, it is advisable that individuals adopt disciplined financial habits, ensuring they spend within their means.
