I believe that the main reasons for this are the lack of effective government policies and insufficient public education on the dangers of plastic pollution. To address this issue, I think that governments should impose strict regulations on plastic waste disposal and raise public awareness on the problems of plastic pollution.
One key reason why plastic pollution has become a pressing issue is the absence of stringent guidelines from the governments on handling plastic waste. The industrial sector is a major contributor of plastic pollution due to the extensive usage of plastic in the products. Moreover, single-use items such as packaging, medical syringes, and beverage containers are made from plastic due to its low cost and high availability. Without government intervention, manufacturing plants can disregard proper waste management protocols, leading to increased plastic waste generation as well as unregulated disposal of plastic waste. Additionally, the lack of public knowledge on the consequences of pollution contributes to the proliferation of plastic waste. Unaware of the damages caused by plastic litter, many individuals consume and throw away plastic products much more than necessary, which can lead to further accumulation of plastic in the environment.
To reduce plastic pollution, government should implement policies that incentivize businesses to use manufacturing methods that are environmentally friendly. For instance, offering tax exemptions to companies for reducing plastic waste and putting limits on the manufacturing of disposable plastic products can encourage corporations to become more eco-friendly. In addition, governments should promote awareness on environmental issues by creating campaigns that discuss the benefits of reducing, reusing, and recycling plastic items as well as the harms that arises from the overusage of plastic products.
In conclusion, plastic pollution is primarily caused the insufficient governmental involvement in the manufacturing industry, worsened by the public’s ignorance of environmental conservation.
