People have different views as to whether prison is the best punishment for lawbreakers or it feils to rehabilitate offenders. Both schools of thought could be true in their own right, but I agree with the latter view.
First of all, prison does not effectively rehabilitate those who are involved in crime . I do not think prison is the best particularly good way to rehabilitate prisoners. It just educated them in the ways of the criminals. Taking away peopleʼs freedom is about the worst thing we can do to a man. It will most definitely not make them a better person. In my view, most inmates who are allowed to study never come into contact with the law again. Furtermore, prison should be a form of punishment, not a holiday camp or a place where murderers can get a degree in psychology at the taxpayersʼ expense.
Secondly, prison environment is much different to the part of society. So when offenders are allowed to leave, they miss the stracture of prison life. Some people re-offend once they are released back into community so that they return to prison culture.
In convolution, even though crime is not justified in any form, prison does not seem like much of deterrent against crime. Moreover, serial crime has a lot to do with prison. I believe we should make criminals repay the victim with a suitable punishment.
