Many people out there have the notion that prison sentence is the best way to handle criminal issues. On the contrary, others also have the sentiment that tuition could address this problem more effectively. Although jailing offenders serves as deterrent, In my view , l strongly agree teaching the population provides basic understanding about the Law.
On the one hand, providing education for the society keeps them informed . Many illegal acts are done by illiterate people , this because, they are ignorant about the law and do not the consequences ahead when one goes against it. Giving more teaching about moral value gives them information and understanding on how to conduct oneself and restrain themselves from any misdeeds. For example, A research conducted by the Ghana Police Service, indicted a decrease in crime rate from 85% to 30% in the year 2023 after embarking on a campaign project teaching the general public about the Law and their rights. From this many individuals have upgraded their intellectual levels. Also, the state should provide free vocational training courses in schools to help people get to skills , which will help them get work doing .This will help reduce criminal activities as they will be productive .
On the other hand, Locking -up criminals serves as a deterrent. This put some fear into other people to restrain from such acts . Providing suitable sanctions will hold them accountable for their misdeeds. For instance,Kenya recorded low crime rate in 2015 , when offenders realized the impacted felt when isolated from family’s.
In conclusion, jailing criminals serves as discouragement to potential offenders. Nonetheless, l believe the state should invest in promoting free skills training in schools . This will help reduce criminal issues in the country.
