According to some experts in psychology, colour can influence people’s feelings; and therefore it is claimed that special attention should be paid to colours when decorating such places as offices and hospitals. I believe this opinion is very much true, since colours can have a significant impact on the health and work capacity of people.
I think colours have a role to play when it comes to people’s health. Green colour, for example, has proved to be helpful in reducing patients’ stress and calming them down. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that green is one of the main colours in the interior design of many hospitals around the world. A vast part of the wards in many hospitals are painted in green, which makes patients feel more comfortable. Quite a similar effect has been observed for blue colour. Due to its soothing effects on mood, it is widely used in the offices of many companies. When office workers, who are often under pressure due to high work loads, are working in the rooms decorated with blue colour, they generally have fewer mental health problems, such as anxiety and chronic fatigue, as compared to employees who are working in rooms painted in other colours. Taking all this into account, green and blue may have favourable effects on one’s psychological health.
Colours can also contribute to people’s work capacity. In hospitals, surgery rooms are usually white, which helps surgeons a lot not to get distracted from their patients by other colours. If walls there were not of white colour, doctors would be more likely to inadvertantly shift their focus from the patient and, as a result, could make mistakes during the intervention. Bright colours, like red, can improve productivity in certain types of jobs as well. This can be a possible explanation why media departments in many companies are painted in red, pink or orange. Employees in this field are required to be creative and have extraordinary thinking, which is instrumental in creating advertisement and promoting the product of a company. Bright colours, in turn, can facilitate creativity and imagination and by doing so can indirectly make media workers come up with great ideas, which can potentially bring profit to the company in the long run
In conclusion, I agree that special attention should be given to colours when designing the premises of hospitals and offices. As it has been shown, right colours can make a lot of difference to people’s mental health and productivity in places such as hospitals and offices.
