People are living longer than they did four years ago because of developments in medicine. The main benefits of living longer are that seniors can spend time with their grandchildren and even great-grandchildren and they have more time to travel. The main drawbacks are that the governments need to spend more money for their pension, treatment and old people are more likely to lose their close friends or relatives.
One primary advantage of living longer is that the elderly can see their grandchildren, because it is very important for the seniors to see their children become parents , they can pass on their experience to younger generations, or help their parents to look after kids, so the parents do not need to worry about how to afford a babysitter. Another advantage of this is that they have a lot of time to travel. For instance, many older people in Europe have been working for all their prime years, so they could not enjoy travelling, and now they can start exploring the world with their friend, or family.
One disadvantage of living longer is that the government have to spend a lot of money on their pensions and to treat them, as people live longer they need pensions to afford buying food and pay for rent and often need more expensive healthcare. For example, Japan has one of the oldest populations, so the government has to spend more money on pensions and healthcare for elderly people, instead investing more money in other services. Moreover, elderly people are more likely to see the death of their best friends or relatives. As they get older, people around them become older and may pass away. As a result, they may feel lonely, and have no-one to talk with, if everyone passes away, they may feel that they are next, and it can be the reason for their emotional distress.
In conclusion, I think, advantages outweigh disadvantages, because in older age people realise that they didn’t pay enough attention to their children, so they may focus on their grandchildren and also realise that they still can see countries that they have wanted to see all their life, but they didn’t have enough time to travel.
