Nowadays, some specialists argue that it is more beneficial for pupils to begin learning a second language at elementary school rather than waiting until they reach high. The primary advantage of this is that they will acquire this language much more effectively, while the strain it can pose on other subjects is considered its main drawback. In my opinion the benefits are much more than the disadvantages.
The main advantage is that learning something at a young age can ensure that more people will be proficient in the matter. That is to say, if children are taught a language in their formative years, they will understand it easier and sound more like a native speaker. To give an example, a study has shown that pupils who learned a foreign language in primary school became advanced in this language faster and sounded more natural when they spoke it. Therefore, teaching children a secondary language as soon as they go into school will increase their capability in that language more effectively.
At the same time, the difficulties of studying too many courses are a major drawback. Clearly, when young children have too much on their plate, they will start to fall behind. Moreover, they are more likely to neglect some of their more important subjects such as math and writing in their own language. To illustrate, a study has shown that students who started to learn a second language in elementary school they struggled more in mathematics in later years. Henc, overworking young students as soon as they start school, will create a struggling generation in basic knowledge.
In conclusion, teaching children a foreign language in their first years of school will create a more diverse generation who can speak more than one language. However, the struggles it can create on learning other crucial subjects, can be seen as the main disadvantage. I believe it is more important to expose pupils to another language as early as possible, as it helps them tremendously in the future.
