The world has become a dangerous place, with crime rates skyrocketing over the past decade. These violent news are broadcasted on newspapers, televisions and other media variaties. However, there are various debates over whether this category of news should be reported due to the many negative outcomes. I, however, strongly believe that it is a citizens right to know about the dangers they might face in their town. This essay will discuss how such news can affect a community.
On the one hand, these news can be frightening in nature and scare many people into not leaving their homes, this might be a severe consequence and thus lead people to believe that such information needs to be restricted. A study conducted in California’s Green Acres retirement home in 2016, showed that 35% of the elderly suffered from panic attacks as a result of reading bad news.
However, making people aware of the hazards in their community could be extremely beneficial. More safety precautions could be undertaken and therefore increase an individuals quality of life. Additionally, educating people could lend a helping hand to police forces as more people could be on the lookout for thieves and murderers, thus help in their arrest.
Overall, I believe that raising awareness about violence and crimes is of key importance. Though it may carry many disadvantages like increasing levels of anxiety and panic attacks, it could be helpful for people in protecting their families and loved ones and even alleviate the workload on police and other task forces.
