The debate between nature and nurture in shaping our personality and development has been a long-standing one in the field of psychology. Both play significant roles, but I opine that the major influence is of nurture or experiences in our life.
In the case of nature, while it’s true that we are born with certain genetic traits, it’s our experiences that shape these traits and determine how they manifest in our behaviour. For instance, a person might be born with a genetic predisposition towards creativity, but without the right nurturing environment that encourages creative expression, this trait might remain dormant. Consider the example of identical twins who share the same genetic makeup. Despite their identical genes, they often develop different personalities, interests, and even health outcomes. This is largely due to their individual experiences – the friends they make, the hobbies they pursue, the challenges they face, and the environment that they grew up.
Experiences, especially during our formative years, have a profound impact on our development. Early childhood experiences shape a person’s understanding of the world, social skills, ability to handle stress, and even their cognitive development. For example, children who are able to read at an early age often develop better language skills and a love for reading. Moreover, experiences continue to shape us throughout their lives. Life events such as moving to a new city, starting a new job, or experiencing a traumatic event can significantly influence our behavior, beliefs, and attitudes.
In conclusion, In my opinion our innate characteristics provide the foundation for our personality and development, it’s our experiences that build upon this foundation and shape us into who we are. Therefore, I believe that nurture or experiences have a more significant influence on our personality and development.
