Recent research suggests that the majority of criminals who are sent to the prison commit crimes again after their release. This repeated pattern is a threat to the society because it affects the lives of people and produces pressure on the justice system.
The main reason for reoffending is that the prisons lack proper rehabilitation facilities. The primary goal of prison is to rehabilitate the prisoners. To give them the chance to return to society as good citizen. But most of the prisons today failed to do so. There is lack of proper facilities like education, vocational training, and psychological counselling. Today most prisons focus on just putting the offender in cell for years and produce psychological and emotional pressure on the prisoner. Furthermore, most prisoner after completing their sentences faces discrimination from employers when applying for a job. They then considered as second class citizens. This creates emotional pressure on them which results entering the criminal activities.
The solution for this is to have proper rehabilitation centres in prisons. Prisons should provide proper vocational training, and psychological counselling to the offenders. The society should be properly educated to treat the ex-offenders as normal people. The prisoners should be properly educated to start a normal, stable life after completing their sentences.
In conclusion, the high rate of repeat criminal activities is mainly caused by the lack of proper rehabilitation, counselling and societal pressure. To overcome this issue there should be proper counselling of the prisoners, government should start awareness regarding the reintegration of the ex-offenders in the society for the betterment of both.
