Nowadays, in certain countries, young adults tend to spend time shopping. The main reasons for this are shopaholism, brand obsession and social media influence. Overall, I consider this trend to be a negative development since many people buy more than they can afford.
The popularity of shopping has three major causes. Firstly, younger people tend to be shopaholics more often than older ones. Shopping becomes an irresistible desire to buy something without actual necessity, but for the pleasure of the buying process itself. This condition comes from childhood unfulfilled wants. Secondly, young adults are becoming more and more obsessed with expensive brands, for instance, Gucci, Chanel, Givenchy, etc. Ownership of brand clothes and bags gives them a feeling of belonging to some elite community. They feel better, as if they have a higher status than others. Thirdly, young people try to look up to social media influencers, since they have recently become a standard for society. Therefore younger people want to match, to be similar to the ideal that they constantly see in the feeds of various social media platforms.
Overall, I think that shopping as a form of leisure activity is a negative trend. Firstly, young adults tend to spend a lot of money on things that they do not actually need. And that tendency could lead to getting a large number of loans. This situation is the worst kind of scenario for every young person who has many goals to achieve, but empty pockets will prevent this. Secondly, it might affect mental health. Shopaholism is considered a psychological disorder that requires special treatment. Therefore, young people should not waste money on shopping thoughtlessly. They must control their financial situation and be responsible for any expenses.
In conclusion, the shopping issue is significant in modern times, since it has a negative impact. Young people tend to spend more money on things they do not need because of different factors like shopaholism and obsession with brands and influencers. That could lead young adults to get into debt and affect their mental health.
