Some people argue that supermarkets should ban selling certain products that could lead to health issues. This essay fully agrees with that statement. I believe that products, which are high in sugar, salt or fat, should be removed from the supermarkets, as firstly, the pressing issue of obesity could be tackled and secondly, less serious diseases through bad nutrition habits would emerge.
Since obesity rates around the world are surging from year to year, banning the source of the issue, would definitely support tackling overweight. Obesity often emerges from wrong nutrition choices and a lack of exercise. In addition, due to a lack education, people sometimes do not even know, that certain products are bad for their health. By taking those products from the shelves of the supermarkets, people would automatically lose access to high-calorie food and would need to turn to more healthier choices. For example, in the UK, soft drinks with a high amount of sugar were banned in 2022 to support the fight against rising obesity rates.
As people with overweight usually develop serve diseases like diabetes or high blood pressure, tackling obesity would lead to directly to decreasing rates of these diseases. Overweight is often linked to serious health issues that even get worse because of the frequent bad nutrition. Through prohibition of certain products that are bad for health, people do not even have the chance to make wrong decisions with regards to their food and drinks. A lower amount of specific diseases that are known to be caused by obesity, would also have a positive impact on healthcare in general, as the insurance costs would probably go down. For instance, in Australia, the ban of selling cigarettes in public shops, had a direct positive impact on the number of lung cancer cases.
In conclusion, to forbid certain food and drinks that contain ingredients which are known to be bad for people’s health, would be a good decision, as the trend of surging obesity rates and number of people, who get sick with an obesity related disease, would significantly decrease over time.
