Some individuals contend that stores should not be permitted to sell food or drinks that are scientifically proven to be harmful to people’s health. However, I disagree with this perspective. I believe that individuals should have the freedom to make their own choices regarding what they consume.
First of all, individuals have the right to make decisions about their own health. People should have the freedom to choose what they eat and drink, even if those choices are unhealthy. For example, in the past, some cities proposed a ban on the sale of sugary drinks in establishments like restaurants, movie theaters, and sports arenas. However, this proposal faced significant backlash from consumers, businesses, and politicians, who argued that it infringed upon personal freedoms and represented government overreach. I agree with this perspective, as I believe that banning the sale of certain foods and drinks would limit people’s personal freedoms and reduce their choices. Moreover, bans can create a black market for banned products, as seen with illegal drugs that fuel organized crime and health risks. For unhealthy foods and drinks, a black market could lead to even more harmful options that are hard to regulate. For example, the alcohol prohibition in the early 20th century resulted in illegal production, leading to dangerous, unsafe products. This illustrates that banning harmful products may lead to greater, worse issues.
In conclusion, although there are health concerns when consuming certain foods and drinks, I believe that banning their sale is not the best solution. Because for the ban, there are many individuals who do not care and continue to do bad things to develop their business despite the impact on consumers’ health.
