It is argued that serious diseases and death nowadays is attributed to smoking. Many people believe that governments had better forbid cigarettes and other tobacco products for the sake of public health, while others hold the opposite view. I agree with the former idea and this essay will shed light on the reasons behind it.
First and foremost, it is understandable why many people are in an argument with the idea of banning tobacco-related products. The common reason probably is that they suppose the state’s policy aiming to forbid cigarettes and tobacco products could conflict with individual freedom. It is believed that, despite detrimental health risks, people have the right to make their own choices to consume cigarettes based on the principle of freedom and autonomy. Thereby, the interdiction of manufacturing cigarettes and tobacco items could lead those who advocate personal freedom to resist the State’s intervention in their habits, including smoking. In addition, several profound effects on the national economies could result from prohibiting the products. Cigarette production makes a significant economic contribution to many aspects of the host countries. Being forced to stop producing cigarettes and tobacco products could cause manufacturers to shut down or be on the verge of bankruptcy, which could increase unemployment and decrease government income from taxes.
However, I believe that prohibiting the manufacturing of cigarettes and tobacco products could outweigh the disadvantages. The fundamental reason is that tobacco could make people addicted to it. Tobacco contains various chemicals which could cause people to suffer from heart disease or severe cancer. Additionally, smoking has detrimental impacts on both smokers and nonsmokers like children or the elderly when they inhale smoke from those tobacco products. Previously, when there were no limitations on cigarette production, the ratio of those who suffered from severe respiratory diseases like lung cancer or cough was alarming. Implementing strict policies to prohibit the manufacturing and consumption of cigarettes would give rise to health betterment in the community.
In conclusion, the health of the community should be prioritized. While the growth of the national economy or individual freedom could be affected, state authorities should regulate and ban cigarettes and dangerous tobacco to improve public health.
