Band 8+: Social media help people to keep in touch with friends and stay on top of news and events.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is true that nowadays, social media undoubtedly plays a pivotal role. While it helps people stay connected with friends and remain informed about current news and events. However, I believe that it has a negative impacts, including disappearing face-to-face interaction and encouraging a telegraphic style of writing.

On the one hand, social media furnishes an unparalleled forum for global discussion and civic engagement. By providing real‑time platforms for debate, these networks enable individuals to voice opinions on local or international issues, thereby exerting influence on political decisions. Grassroots campaigns, once confined to town halls, can now burgeon into international movements with remarkable speed. Furthermore, digital connectivity transcends geographical boundaries: a student in Samarkand can share research findings with peers in Sao Paulo, or a photographer in Tokyo can inspire wanderlust with images of cherry‑blossom season. Through such exchanges, people cultivate cross‑cultural understanding and forge relationships that would have been untenable in previous decades.

On the other hand, the anonymity inherent to many social networking platforms and the concomitant absence of face-to-face interaction can foster uncivil or even aggressive discourse. Without the moderating influence of body language or vocal tone, users may feel emboldened to employ abusive language or engage in cyberbullying that they would avoid in person. Moreover, the brevity demanded by character limits often encourages a telegraphic style of writing, relying heavily on emoticons or acronyms to convey nuance. As a result, subtlety and depth can be sacrificed, leading to misunderstandings or superficial exchanges rather than thoughtful dialogues.

In conclusion, while social media’s depersonalized communication style and reliance on shorthand can undermine civility and depth, its capacity to democratize information and unite individuals across the globe renders it an indispensable tool of the twenty‑first century. Acknowledging both its perils and its promise is essential to harnessing social media for the common good.
