The study of history has long been a subject of debate. Some individuals argue that it offers a little relevance on current time. However, others believe that to understand the present we should learn the past. This essay will explore both perspectives before presenting my own view.
Critics might claim that history has a limited value in the modern world due to the difference in circumstances and context of some events. This fact can distract from addressing contemporary issues and planning for the future. For example, resources and time are better to spend on innovations and progress rather than dwelling on what has already occurred. Furthermore, historical materials might be written by victors or by those with power, which can lead to bias and incomplete narratives. For instance, every narrator interprets one occurrence on their own way, as a result, it may lead to confusion and doubt on some studies.
Despite these factors, some argue that the significance of learning cannot be dismissed due to its habit of repeating itself. If we will not look at our earlier mistakes and analyze them, we would make them over and over. Wars serve as a good example for it. The recurrence of similar conflicts throughout history suggest that humanity failed on heeding lessons from the past. In addition, historical knowledge provides an opportunity to improve critical thinking and decision-making ability. As argued before, there are numerous interpretations of historical incidents and this factor contribute to develop cognitive skills and form our own opinion.
In conclusion, although some people think that history contribute only marginally because of various conditions between periods of time and doubt in sources, others consider learning it to examine errors and expand intellectual capacities. I am more inclined to argues of second group and support the benefits of knowledge acquisition from history.
