There is a growing concern regarding vehicle-free days in many cities today. Some people think that it is a good opportunity to contribute to an eco-friendly initiative, while others think that this is a low-effective and almost useless action, which only prohibits them from using personal transport. However, I think that vehicle-free days have more beneficial and positive aspects that overweight any disadvantages.
On the one hand, this kind of controversial and ambiguous initiatives should be optional. Not everyone want to be engaged in such an activity for many reasons. And one of the most relevant is that a lot of humans nowadays highly rely on transportation, especially the personal ones, as it provides more convenience and is self-secure. For example, individuals who live far away from their workplaces or educational institutes would be late during the vehicle-free day. In addition, the overall output after this initiative would be relatively small, since eco problems are globally widespread. Consequently, some people might think that such a measure is meaningless.
While on the other hand, vehicle-free days have a huge role in our society. Problems related to ecological conditions are on a high priority. Even if the immediate environmental effect is small, vehicle-free days can araise awareness in society and encourage long-term behavioural change. For instance, after participating in a vehicle-free day, some residents may become more willing to use public transport or bycicles regularly.
In conclusion, while concerns regarding temprory inconvenience are pretty understandable and valid, I stronly believe that vehicle-free initiatives play a vital role in encouraging eco-friendly habits and healthier cities.
