Positive And Negative

Band 7+: Some countries have introduced laws to limit working hours for employees. Why are these laws introduced? Do you think they are a positive or negative development? You should write at least 250 words.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, laws dedicated to limiting worktime have been introduced by some governments. These regulations were made to prevent the exploitation of employees, overworking, and subsequent mental hazards. In this essay, I will argue that this is a positive development.

It is true that some people have to work overtime to support themselves and their families. While commendable, overworking often strains one’s physical and mental well-being, leading to feelings of stress, isolation, and dissatisfaction, along with consequent decrease in productivity. Furthermore, many of these individuals become vulnerable to exploitation by their employers. A construction company, for instance, may take advantage of the more dependent workers by extending their labour without fair compensation. To mitigate these issues, protect individual rights, and improve working conditions, governments enforced strict boundaries on how much an employee can work per day.

From my perspective, these laws are advantageous for both the employees and the employers. It is not a secret that rest and relaxation are necessary for workers to be efficient on their jobs. Providing people with legal protection and fixed working limits can root a sense of security and restore their energy, relieving stress and fatigue. Moreover, additional leisure time enables them to spend more time with loved ones and pursue personal interests, contributing to their happiness and well-being.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that the introduction of laws limiting working hours is a positive development due to several reasons, such as the protection of civil rights and cultivation of healthy work-life balance.
