There is a growing public opinion that countries should focus on manufacture most of their food and avoid import. I partially disagree with this statement, owing to the fact that global trade offers a wide range of food and brings a lot of funds; however, it would be prudent to note that in some instances local food production brings independence.
The main reason why I believe that international trade provides people with a wider variety of products and drives economic growth. This is due to the fact that many nations cannot grow certain crops because of climate and land limitations. By this I mean, people can eat food that is not possible to produce locally. In addition, global trade allows farmers strengthen their networks. For example, Turkey imports bananas from tropical regions, which are impossible to grow them in local conditions.
Another reason why I support this idea is because of importing certain foods can bring a lot of money to a country’s economy .The reason for this is that producing certain products is too expensive because of high technology costs. In other words, buying from countries where is cheaper allows governments to use their money for other reasons.
On the other hand, local economy can make a country more independent. This is because if countries rely on each other and in the long term, certain fields might be underdeveloped. To be more precise, local farming can keep a constant food production even if global trade is damaged. For example, many countries faced oil crises during the Russia-Ukraine war .
In conclusion, I partially disagree that countries should produce most of their food because of variety and financial opportunities ; however, in some cases, it would be wise to consider the fact that it is also essential to consider that local production strengthens independence and stability.
