Some people believe that nations should grow most of their own food and reduce imports as much as possible. I partially agree with this idea because it can help countries a lot economically and socially if they produce the food, they eat the most. At the same time, the fact that their countries import food from other countries has a positive effect on the relations of the countries politically.
The most important consideration is that the production of the most eaten foods by the countries themselves has a positive effect on the country’s economy. In general, the purchase of frequently consumed foods from other countries leads to excessive material consumption, which in turn directly damages the economy. Production is carried out according to demand. Producing the most consumed foods in their own countries means that states can sell more and generate more revenue. In addition, the more countries produce food, the more it develops. For instance, countries that get their food from other countries are mostly underdeveloped or developing countries.
Furthermore, domestic food production is crucial for improving relations between the population and the state, which contributes to social welfare. One reason for this is that increased local production leads to more job opportunities and a reduction in unemployment. As unemployment decreases, overall satisfaction among the population tends to increase. Additionally, there is a growing belief that domestically produced food is healthier. Food is more likely to be safer and of higher quality when produced locally.
On the other hand, it is also possible to make the opposing case. Food purchases are mainly made between neighboring countries. The fact that countries buy food from other countries is very important for inter-country relations, because the development of countries directly depends on each other, that is, on mutual relations with each other. As long as the relationship is good, development is inevitable. If food trade decreases, this will lead to a decrease in inter-country relations, which will lead to a decrease in development.
In conclusion, while producing most of their own food can have significant economic and social benefits for countries, such as increased revenue, job creation, and improved social welfare, it is also important to consider the positive impact of food imports on international relations.
