Reduced attention span on political news has always been a matter of opinion as there are always more important aspects that need society’s attention. Nevertheless, others, such as politicians, take the opposite view. As far as I am concerned, awareness of the current political state is essential for the individuals, but it must be in moderation to avoid missing out on various problems.
Firstly, it is argued that individuals should keep up with the current political state by increasing their attention to politics. Staying informed enables people to understand how policies impact their life, which is vital for a functional democracy. This government system represents diverse interests, creating addressing needs and concerns of various groups in society policies. Therefore, a platform for dialogue and negotiation is built among numerous parties, nurturing a cohesive society.
In contrast, a rationale for decreasing attention span on politics is the awareness about other aspects. For example, it is likely that not paying attention to finance will lead to start-up companies not being financially supported. As a result, a number of potential entrepreneurs who, even though having brilliant ideas, go bankrupt. A negative implication of this is that entrepreneurs may face social stigma, which will in turn hold them back from reaching their potential, in turn affecting the economy skeptically.
Having considered both arguments, I believe that staying informed is crucial for growing a democratic community. However, shunning the rest of the news tends to fumble growth opportunities. An appropriate attention span is the key for a balanced society.
