The topic of child discipline remains a subject of debate, despite the extensive research conducted in this area. Some individuals advocate for strict control over children’s behavior, while others believe in granting children the freedom to express themselves.
Supporters of strict discipline argue that adults should impose clear rules and guidelines on children to instill good manners and proper conduct. They maintain that children, due to their limited understanding, require external guidance to shape their behavior. The rationale behind this approach is that early training will lead to the formation of positive lifelong habits.
On the other hand, proponents of allowing children to freely express themselves assert that each child possesses unique innate traits that resist external control. According to this view, every individual is born with distinct characteristics and an inherent sense of right and wrong. Therefore, they advocate for a hands-off approach to let children naturally develop their personalities and exercise independent judgment.
While enforcing strict discipline may foster positive behavior in children, excessive control can occasionally provoke a rebellious reaction. Conversely, excessive freedom might lead to inappropriate behavior as children may lack the awareness to recognize and correct their mistakes. Striking a balance between these two approaches is thus essential, as it allows both parents and children to play a collaborative role in developing good discipline.
