Over the past few decades there has been a fierce debate about meaning of technology in peoples relationships. Opinions are devided between those who advocate the idea that technology has brought people closer together and those who claim that this development has made communication less genuine today. Although both persperctoves have merit, I believe that technological developments have created more opportunities for people to build and maintain relationships. This essay will discuss both views before presenting my opinion.
One compelling argument in favor of techology is that it enables people to communicate instantly regardless of geographical distance. This can be largelly attributed to the widespread use of messaging applications, social media platforms, and video-calling services, which allow individuals to stay in touch with their family members, partners and friends wherever they live. This development became particularly important during the COVID-19 pandemic, when most of the people reported felling lonelines and isolated due to lockdowns, with no opportunities to see their close people. Moreover, nowadays techology allows people to build friendships with individuals from completely different counties. This promotes cultural exchage, broadens people’s understanding of other traditions and religions, and enables them to share life experience with one another. Consequently, technology has significantly strengthened communication and helped people preserve close relationships despite physical distance.
However, the opponents of this perspective argue that technology has made relationships less meaningful by redusing face-to-face interaction. This is mainly because many people spend a considerable amount of time communicating through social media rather than meeting in person. As a result, online conversations often lack emotional connection and non-verbal communication, making relationships more superficial. A clear demonstration of this can be seen in the example of many teenagers which prefer texting their friends instead of spending time together, which may weaken their social skills. Thus, this development may negatively eafect personal relationships and increase social awareness.
In conclusion, although technology has negatively affected some aspects of people’s lives, I believe that its benefits outweigh its drawbacks because it enables pople to maintain relationships regardless of their locations.
