It is sometimes argued that adults ought to commonly control their youngsters’ choice of people in their lives. However, there are those who believe that young generation are entitled to make their own choices. Although parents occasionally have a better understanding of what would be best for their children, in my opinion, teenagers should take responsibility for their own decisions and determine what’s right for them through experience.
On the one hand, advocates of strong parental influence assume that guidance is essential for children’s lives. This is because parents can be better at judging people due to their maturity and life experience. Young people might be easily influenced by others and may not be able to distinguish between bad people. While adults are more likely to identify negative behavior and bad traits. Hence, parents prevent their children from forming relationships with potentially bad environments. For instance, when choosing a life partner, youngsters tend to focus on emotions and attraction, whereas adults consider stability, compatibility and perspective.
On the other hand, opponents of this view believe that such decisions are personal and should be made independently. The reason for this is that friendship and romantic relationships are part of personal identity. And young people need to learn through their own experience, also develop the ability to judge people from their mistakes. Otherwise, it would lead to social problems in adulthood. As a result, independence in making social and romantic choices helps adolescents develop maturity and responsibility.
In conclusion, though people may vary in their opinions, I am firmly convinced that children should choose their friends and partners without parental intervention. This is due to the fact that making independent decisions develops personal growth.
