Band 8+: Some people argue that people today have become more dependent on others, while others believe that modern society has made individuals more independent. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The rapid advancement of technology and shifting societal norms have impacted how people interact with one another, leading to differing opinions on whether individuals today are more independent or dependent. While technology offers tools that foster self-reliance, I believe modern society has indeed made people more dependent on others, particularly in the realms of social validation and reliance on specialized services.

Firstly, the rise of social media has amplified people’s need for external validation. Platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook encourage users to share personal milestones, opinions, and achievements, often seeking approval in the form of likes, shares, and comments. For instance, studies show that the frequent use of social media can lead individuals to prioritize others’ opinions, resulting in a heightened dependence on external validation. This phenomenon is especially pronounced among young people, who often equate social approval with self-worth.

Secondly, modern society has fostered greater dependency on specialised services, making people less self-sufficient in certain aspects of daily life. For example, tasks that were once handled independently, such as home repairs, cooking, and even grocery shopping, are now often outsourced to professionals or digital services. With apps offering home delivery, and services for almost any need, people increasingly rely on external providers for convenience, reducing the need to develop these skills themselves. While this shift provides efficiency, it also fosters a dependency that was less prevalent in previous generations.

In conclusion, while certain technological advancements allow for independence, modern society has ultimately made people more dependent, both in seeking social validation and relying on specialised services. Ultimately, this trend suggests that while we are advancing technologically, we are becoming more interconnected and reliant on others in our everyday lives.
