In the contemporary era, the development of a country base on many aspect such as: Economic, political, education, … However, one of the most crucial factors contribute to the advancement of a community is legislation, it plays an important role in the society. Therefore, it always a discussed topic for many people, some people assume that the legal system should focus more on rehabilitation than punishment for criminals. In my opinion, I don’t agree with this statement.
To begin, these days, the governments use law as a weapon to warn the wrongdoers and manage the community. Consequently, by passing the stricter law and retributions, the crime rates will be considerably decreased since it will create fear in offender’s mindset that they will face severe punishments if they participate in criminal activities. Moreover, in the last few decades, in many countries, the governments use prison as a deterrent for criminals which help removing the potentially dangerous crimes from the society thus it can maintain the public order and make that area become safer.
In the other hand, there is an argued that it is immoral to use strict penalties for the prisoners. Additionally, many wrongdoers should be given a second chance if they repent with their behavior. Nowadays, rehabilitation has been used in most of the countries in the world because it helps people correct their behavior as well as re-educate them to the right path so they can have an opportunity to socialize.
In conclusion, the government should focus more on punishments in order to reduce crime and prevent the citizens from criminal. However, we should also apply rehabilitation in the society because it less expensive and more effective than punishment.
