There is a belief that children should learn a secondary language at primary school more than secondary school. In this essay, I will briefly explain the upsides and the downsides as I believe that the upsides are more superior.
According to a study conducted by Texas University, the learning capability of a human being usually peaks before the puberty stage which is around the age 5-7. With this in mind, allowing a child to learn another language during those years can greatly improve their linguistic skills and have less struggles learning in the future. Secondly, the youngling can engage in numerous cultures from an early age. For instance, learning 2 culture-centered languages such as Japanese and German can assist in broadening their perspective on life and having more intel on the country if they decided to pursue studying internationally.
However, a significant drawback is that the cultural swap from early age can diminish the importance of a culture which is a major cause to many problems such as brain drain and culture scarcity. The absence of pop culture can influence many young people to forget about their roots and have less appreciation to ancestors. In addition, the language impact can fluctuate depending on the situation. If a country faces an economic boom, this will greatly increase the value of their language as many citizens will move there, so letting people choose which language to learn later on can help them choose a suitable residence.
In conclusion, even though learning a language earlier can result in numerous profound abilities, the overall effects can be risky as the individual may change their language later on.
