The advent of autonomous cars represents a paradigm shift; with the potential to reshape the way we commute or interact with urban transport. While critics remain wary of the ethical and technical quagmires that accompany such a transition, I strongly agree that driverless cars’ benefits can easily outweigh its drawbacks.
On the one hand, the implications of autonomous cars are unavoidable. First and foremost, it would be naïve to regard driverless cars as a panacea of environmental issues as the more it would be purchased, the more it would be produced as a result, the factory releases the green house gases that can pollute the air, water and can lead to global warming and climate change. Secondly, if the car must choose between hitting a pedestrian or swerving and endangering its own passengers, the ethical calculus becomes immensely complex.
On the other hand, the merits of driverless cars are substantial and far-reaching with significant benefits. Firstly, driverless cars offer a glimpse into a future of enhanced safety and efficiency. Secondly, foremost among the arguments in favor of driverless technology is the potential for a precipitous decline in vehicular fatalities. Last but not least, global statistics consistently indicate that vast majority of road accidents are attributable to human error- be it through distraction, impairment of fatigue.
In conclusion, while it causes some environmental issues or exacerbate existing wealth inequalities, its benefits can outweigh its implications as driverless cars create the safety for their passengers.
