Band 9: "Life today is much more stressful for teenagers than it was in the past" Do you agree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Every generation faces its own sources of stress, but the nature of that stress changes over time. In the past, teenage stress often revolved around physical survival, strict family rules, and finding a stable job in a more predictable world. Today, however, teenagers must cope with digital pressure, academic competition, and an uncertain future. In my opinion, life today is significantly more stressful for teenagers than it was in the past.

Firstly, today’s teenagers live under constant digital pressure, a phenomenon that simply did not exist before. Social media platforms create a relentless sense of continuous self-comparison with others. For example, a teenager may worry deeply about his or her appearance or level of success after seeing carefully curated “perfect” photos and achievements of peers online. Unlike past generations, who could leave school and escape peer judgment, modern teens carry their social world in their pockets, making stress an around-the-clock experience.

Secondly, modern teenagers are far more worried about their future and career than their predecessors were. The difficulty of making life-defining decisions in a rapidly changing world, combined with constant high competition for university places and jobs, creates immense pressure. For instance, a student may feel overwhelming stress when choosing a profession or applying to university, realizing that a single mistake could negatively affect the rest of his or her life. In contrast, teenagers in the past often followed clearer, more predictable career paths, which reduced the burden of choice and uncertainty.

To conclude, I strongly agree that life today is much more stressful for teenagers than it was in the past. Digital pressure and uncertainty about the future make modern teenage life significantly more challenging. Although stress has always existed in some form, today it is more constant, more invasive, and psychologically demanding for young people. This change calls for greater awareness and support from parents, schools, and society as a whole.
