Some people believe that economic growth is a country’s most important goal, while others argue that environmental protection should take priority. Although economic development can create jobs and improve infrastructure, I believe that protecting the environment is more important because environmental damage can threaten public health and long-term prosperity.
On the one hand, economic growth can significantly improve living standards. As businesses expand, they create employment opportunities, while increased economic activity can generate tax revenue for investment in public infrastructure. For example, China’s rapid economic growth following the reforms introduced in 1978 created millions of jobs, particularly in manufacturing. Economic development also supported the expansion of urban infrastructure, including roads and public transport networks. These improvements have made it easier for people to access employment and essential services, demonstrating why governments consider economic growth a priority.
On the other hand, pursuing economic growth without sufficient environmental protection can have serious consequences. As incomes rise, more people may be able to afford private cars, especially in areas with inadequate public transport. The resulting increase in traffic contributes to air pollution, which can lead to respiratory illnesses. Industrial activity also releases greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming and can intensify extreme weather events, including floods and heavy rainfall. Such events may destroy homes, damage infrastructure and endanger human lives. In the long term, the costs of environmental damage may outweigh some of the economic benefits, particularly when governments must spend public funds on disaster recovery and healthcare.
In conclusion, although economic growth can create jobs and improve living standards, I believe environmental protection should take priority. Governments should pursue sustainable development, ensuring that economic progress does not come at the expense of public health or future generations.
