It is believed that economic development should be prioritized as a way to end world poverty and hunger, while others argue that it should be limited due to its environmental damage. This essay discusses both perspectives before explaining why a shift towards sustainable development, rather than a complete halt to growth, offers the most viable path.
On the one hand, economic development is necessary to improve the public’s living standards because the population benefits from new job opportunities created by economic growth. This helps them secure financial and social stability, addressing the very core of issues such as poverty, starvation or crime. Furthermore, prosperous economic growth enables governments to generate stable financial resources, which can be invested in public infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, and transport systems. As a result, social issues involving literacy, healthcare and poverty can be tackled, leading to improved living standards and social equality. On the other hand, it is undeniable that systematic growth is harmful to the environment. Around the world, industrial practices such as untreated emissions, resource exploitation and water contamination have caused severe environmental damage, which ultimately threatens human health and livelihoods. For instance, air pollution in densely populated city centers increases the risk of respiratory illnesses, especially threatening vulnerable age groups such as children or the elderly. Additionally, the greenhouse effect and global warming in recent years have greatly contributed to severe weather events such as floods, droughts or storms, which directly disrupt agriculture, production and transportation and cause great economic crises.
In conclusion, while I believe that economic development plays a significant role in combating alarming problems such as poverty and social inequality, its impacts on the environment should be recognized and addressed. Therefore, the path forward lies not in choosing between economic growth and environmental protection, but in integrating them. By adopting sustainable policies and efficient environmental standards, governments can ensure that progress today does not come at the expense of tomorrow.
