Certain people are of the opinion that it is better to lend a hand towards the local community than to charity programmes. I strongly agree to this statement as charities often deceive people and the local community can develop with some support. This essay will discuss both views.
First and foremost, giving donations to high profile institutions may result in corruption. Such places use poor people as puppets to grasp the audience’s attention. The money donated usually gets used for personal reasons other than charity, which is a major concern. Only a small amount of the total is given to the needy, which defeats the purpose of such organisations. In addition, most of the advertisements shown are fake and are done only for popularity. To cite an example, a newspaper report from 2015 claimed that almost 50 charity programmes in the US were frauds and were arrested for money laundering.
Secondly, supporting the locals can further improve their overall community. Even a small donation will go a long way to help them. They can use this money to develop the local schools, hospitals, roads and other public facilities. Additionally, the young pupils will also develop, which will inturn benefit the community in the long run. Moreover, giving direct support to locals is better than doing it through certain organisations due to the main issue of corruption as mentioned in the previous paragraph. For example, according to The Times of India, more than 500 communities were benefitted in a small village of Gujarat due to the direct support given to them in 2019.
In conclusion, I am of the opinion that it is better to help the local people directly as the chances of the money getting used for other purpses is dim as oppposed to that by charities.
