Some believe cultural traditions are disappearing because of increasing globalisation and the growing influence of digital media. Advocates argue that the rise of technology plays an important role in advertising and conserving local traditions. Personally, I believe that globalisation and the development of technology both have benefits and challenges for local traditional cultures.
To start with, the influence of social media allows people to advertise and promote local traditional cultures. As cultural practices are promoted, more individuals will be drawn to local traditions, expressing appreciation and love for the culture. For example, Thai is internationally famous for its traditional music by promoting it in music programs, live music shows, and posts online as background music. Additionally, globalisation helps not only preserve these cultural heritages, but also promote intercultural understanding.
On the other hand, it is true that globalisation and the growing influence of digital media can threaten traditional identities and local cultures. When popular culture slowly dominates the world, young people are usually more interested in up-to-date trends, completely neglecting the importance of preserving culture. By way of illustration, many a teenager forgets local culture, watering it down to out-of-fashion trends instead of cultural traditions. Therefore, if not properly managed, globalisation and digital media can be the cause of the abolition of local traditional cultures.
In general, while our world grows continuously every day with newer and more innovative developments, the growing influence of digital media would be a threat to traditional cultures unless it is well-moderated. Globalisation will be a side problem that may result in local cultures disappearing if proper mitigating actions aren’t taken when needed. I stand with the belief that technology and internationalisation bring both advantages and disadvantages for local traditional cultures
