In recent years, it has become a popular opinion that governments should have access to private conversations due to the usage of phones for many criminal activities. However, many still believe we shouldn’t share this information without any particular reasons, because of the risk it would carry on.
On the one hand, it is obvious that lots of crimes are possible or, at least, made easier thanks to mobile phones, which permit people to communicate with no problem through calls or messages. Therefore, the controll operated by governments should reduce this phenomenon, by preventing criminals from organising themselves in such an esay way. As a consequence, cities and towns would gain much more safety for their inhabitants and even for tourists.
On the other hand, the side effects of this kind of control are as clear as the benefits. If the purpose id to find criminals before they act, it would take little time before governments start to violate our privacy. We have to remember that our privacy is a right we achieved in many decades. Nevertheless, it would be easy for governments to cancel thet right once we let them throw away years of fight for our freedom. Indeed, there ara many examples of countries around the world which do not guarantee privacy to their citizens. Let’s think, for instance, to North Korea, where people don’t even know what “freedom” means.
In conclusion, I explained the reasons why security is important, underlining that it shouldn’t be reached thanks to governments’ control, otherwise the risks would be even greater than the advantages we’d obtain.
