It is a heavily discussed question, if governments should be able to control everyone’s mobile devices. While some people are persuaded the regime should have a general permission to control phones due to safety reasons, others strongly believe these information are private and nobody should be able to get access without the allowance of the owner. Although you can find strong arguments supporting both views on this topic, I personally agree more with the second position. In my opinion the disadvantages for citizens would be higher with permanent reviews on calls and messages.
Firstly, people who support the second opinion, mostly relate to the idea that everyone has a right on privacy, how it is declared in the universial declaration of human rights or the European charter of fundamental rights. Privacy is a high social value and allows people independence, dignity and autonomy. An allowance to seek private calls and messages would restrict this human rights or the massively. Additionally, there might be the fright among the society that some information would lose their context, while being overlooked by an executive position. This might lead to false suspicion and gets innocent into unnecessary trouble. For instance when people moan about their employer after a hard day of work and might use rougher language to express their disappointment it might be understood wrongly when being overheard. The result would be, that men get scared to express their opinion freely. In this way another human right would be limited. Lastly, with getting permission the government would get a huge amount of power and might against people and therefore, a big responsibility.
On the other hand, there are as many supportive arguments to give the regime the ability of controlling mobile phones. As everyone knows, crime rose a lot over the last years and with the invention of the internet criminals got a totally new platform to connect and plan with their same kind. The permission to control messages, while only having a suspicion, would enable the police to act earlier and maybe prevent illegal acts before they happen. There are different cases in which the allowance would be more than useful, for instance kidnapping, terrorism or any other crime where the police needs to act quickly to prevent the society of harm. Another reasonable aspect to consider the involvement of authorities as helpful, might be that people are more and more forced to watch their expression on for example social media platforms. When users know everything might be tracked, this could lead to a natural prevention of some criminal actions, because they wouldn’t find the courage without the anonymity in the internet.
Nevertheless, in my opinion privacy is a human right and shouldn’t be harmed. It would need a lot of laws to take care of any exploitation of this possibility. So I think it will take more years until the final judicial expertise will be far enough.
