Band 5+: Some people believe that governments should implement policies such as taxes on unhealthy foods and subsidies for healthy options to combat obesity. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Maintaining healthy living habits towards people, this day, the government should implement policies to increase prices of unhealthy products and support products with high nutritional factors which can do a favor to fight with obesity. In my view, I partly agree with this perspective for several reasons, which I will elaborate on in this essay.

On the one hand, I understand why some think that the price of fattening foods need to increase to prevent obesity. Firstly, imposing sky high price on these products will make buyer give up spending money on unhealthy food. If the government rises the price of combo fried and chicken from 170 VND to the price of 300 VND for example, consumers will feel hesitant and they may change to consume healthy products instead. The second reasons is that, I believe subsidies for healthy options are a better approach as it will provide an incentive for people to buy those foods, as they will be more accessible and affordable.

However, I also hold a belief that food is not a main reason which causes overweight issue. The first reason worth mentioning is that a sedentary lifestyle is also a cause of obesity. The more lazy you are to exercise, the more fat will accumulate, causing obesity. In addition, physical body structures contribute to obesity such as heredity, endocrine obesity. The change in skeletons even if you consume less than others still have the ability to cause fat, not only unhealthy foods cause overweight.

To conclude, although it cannot be denied that junk foods cause serious overweight, I am of the opinion that taxes on unhealthy foods and subsidies for healthy options may reduce the spelling of people who are obese.
