Band 7+: Some people believe that harsher punishment reduce crime. Others believe that education and social reform are more effective solutions. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Punishment is a fundamental component of the criminal justice system. However, the effectiveness and morality of different types of punishment remain topics of heated debate. Some argue that harsher punishment is effective in deterring crime rates, while others advocate that inmates should be educated and get morally behaved. In my opinion, education and addressing the root causes of crime is the best way to prevent crime since severe penalties tend to have negative consequences.

Many people believe that offenders must be given harsher punishments to reduce repeat offenses and serve as a deterrent to others. Supporters think severe punishments, such as capital punishment or death penalty, are necessary response to heinous crimes like murder and terrorism, providing closure to the victims’ families and deterring future crimes. However, there is a risk of executing innocent people, too. In addition, there is little evidence to suggest that capital punishment is more effective than life imprisonment in deterring crime. Moreover, when the case is not so complicated, then even suitable punishments may show reverse effect on offenders. For example, mandatory minimum sentences for drug offenses are designed to discourage drug-related crimes. Notwithstanding, critics argue that overcrowded prisons, inhumane conditions, and a lack of rehabilitative programs often make incarceration counterproductive. That is why many inmates, upon release, struggle reintegrating into society, leading to high recidivism rates.

I think rehabilitation has become a critical aspect of modern justice systems. These days some of the factors that are contributing to crime are psychological and behavioral issues, poverty, and unemployment. Mental health disorders, substance abuse, and exposure to violence during childhood can significantly increase the likelihood of criminal behavior. That is why rehabilitative and educational programs are being provided for offenders. For example, countries like Norway mostly emphasize rehabilitative approach, offering education, vocational training, and therapy to prisoners. This has resulted in significantly lower recidivism rates compared to countries with more punitive systems. This highlights the importance of rehabilitating criminals in order to reduce crime levels.

In conclusion, harsh sentencing does not help in reducing crime rates. In contrast, the best way to deter crime levels is to provide rehabilitative programs to change the offenders’ behavior, and create opportunities for their life in freedom.
