In today’s world, where sport is a highly valued practice among people, there is a debate about whether it is beneficial for countries to host international sporting events or not. Although there are some downsides of major sporting events, I firmly believe that potential merits far outweigh them.
On the negative side, disadvantages are mostly minor, however, should not be overlooked. First and foremost, influx of tourists is a driving factor of environmental degradation, with most visitors littering the space due to their unawareness about public rules. This ignorance may also result in gradual damage of heritage sites. For instance, Asian and European countries are also known for their rich history, which also appeals to tourists who come to enjoy sporting events. Nevertheless, they may unintentionally cause damage to the traditional heritage by touching them, overcrowding or littering sites. Another notable drawback can be that visitors may inconvenience residents, since governments could force local communities for temporary displacement. To create more space for events, sometimes people can be taken out from their permanent living areas for a certain period, so powerful is the government’s control that even majority of people cannot object their decisions. Despite these downsides, the most obvious and self-explanatory problem would be the cost of hosting. Organizers of events need to take into account the expenditure of renting venues, organizing, advertising, and even post-event actions, which would be undeniably prohibitively expensive, depleting the country’s budget. Given the circumstances, hosting international sporting events may be seen as an unnecessary burden or considered to be full of challenges, thereby objected by some people.
Nevertheless, there are more advantages than someone may expect. To begin with, a strong economic boost it can bring. Tourists visiting the country would have to pay for transportation, accommodation, entrance tickets, and overall living needs, spending large sums along with enriching country’s budget and local entrepreneurs. Local businessmen tend to make use of the opportunity this influx of tourists provides, therefore increasing the quality of their lives. Moreover, countries hosting major sporting events often upgrade infrastructure, public services, and facilities before the next day in order to leave lasting impression on visitors. Improvements in amenities are also considered to be beneficial. For general public, which will also utilize this on an everyday basis. For instance, Indonesia’s infrastructures experienced a major upgrade in 2018 thanks to the Asian Games they hosted. Organizing large-scale sporting events may also provide people with well-paying jobs, thereby decreasing the unemployment rate substantially. Most people would find decent works for themselves, largely because organizing requires thousands of people willing to work for a salary. While all these benefits brought by hosting sporting events contribute to countries holistically, we should not forget about the main advantage, global recognition. By organizing events, countries bring exposure and soft power, which will elevate their image on the world stage, inviting future investments, trade partnerships, and tourism. Even developing countries may grasp the opportunity of standing alongside some of the world’s most developed and admired countries.
In conclusion, while disadvantages exist, they are easily surpassed by merits, which give countries the chance to grow and develop.
