Many individuals hold the belief that it is good for a country’s culture to import foreign movies and TV programmes. Others, however, believe that it is better to produce these locally. In this essay, I wil challenge the validity of this view.
It is understandable why many individuals hold the belief that it is good for a country’s culture to import foreign movies and TV programmes. They may argue that importing foreign movies and TV programmes can spread a country’s culture to different countries, where individuals can access different cultures through these movies and programmes. For instance, when importing movies that relevant to Japan’s educational systems, citizens from all over the globe can know more about educational methods of Japan; therefore, they may apply these methods into their daily lives for teaching their own offsprings if they find these methods bring benefits. However, this line of thinking ignores the fact these films may not meet citizens’ requirements.
To reinforce my point of view, when importing foreign movies and TV programmes, not all the foreign movies and TV programmes will meet citizens’ requirements. This can easily result in boring among film goers without gaining much knowledge and values from them; therefore, it is a waste of money when importing these foreign movies. Developing countries, for examples, when import foreign movies or TV programmes, they may pay a large amount of money to import these films, and when importing film that can not meet citizens’ requirements, they may face financial problems as this money can be invested in other systems such as healthcare or education. Therefore, I strongly believe that it is better to produce these locally because film industry will have a better understanding about citizens’ taste of films and programmes rather than importing.
In conclusion, although importing foreign movies and TV programmes can help citizens have a better understanding of other culture such as Japan’s educational systems, I strongly believe that when producing locally, these films will meet citizens’ requirements as well as ease financial burden, especially developing countries.
