In recent years, students’ education has become an increasingly topic among the public. While some people argue that foreign literature and history should be the primary task, I believe that local history and literature are more essential.
In contemporary society, the trend of globalization is obvious, which requires new generations to have global sight and knowledge, leading to many people supporting schools to teach international knowledge. Moreover, during the teaching process, students can be inspired by these cultures from other countries to gain new interest. Educators can foster an environment that includes diverse cultural backgrounds and training students’ relevant abilities, which is useful in their future life and career. However, foreign literature and history also cause abundant academic pressure on students’ shoulders because many students cannot understand these knowledges in the first place, leading to the decline of their academic performance.
On the other hand, there are more reasons to support that educational facilities should teach more national history and literature. First and foremost, these works are tightly related to a nation’s awareness. Literature is the reflection of a country’s social background in a period, while history contains many local cultures and useful expericence. Otherwise, through these cultural works, students can gain a sense of identity. What’s more, considering students’ abilities, schools introduced local literary works to young people, which are easier than other countries’ works due to the students being able to read it without translation.
In conclusion, I deem that schools should set local literature and history as the main task, while they should be responsible for fostering pupils’ national consciousness.
