In today’s digital age, technology has radically altered the way people communicate and interact. While some people argue that these advancements made people more sociable by connecting them all over the world, others believe that it resulted in extreme isolation and a decline in face-to-face meetings. This essay explores both views and states my personal opinion on that matter.
The proponents of those who advocate that the continuous shift in technological revolution enabled people to communicate regardless of their location, thereby making them more easygoing and hospitable. The main reason for this development in people’s social skills is that technology can be correlated to the fact that it connects them from any walk of the world. For example, Telegram, one of the most used messenger apps, can create an opportunity for people to chat using their phones and laptops. Unlike letters from the past, we currently have access to get our messages delivered via Telegram within the matter of just several seconds. Furthermore, the video call function on Telegram is now available for public use. Using video call messages, individuals can exchange real-time occurrences and experiences visually.
Nevertheless, there are also some drawbacks to the development of technology. A simple one is that it is also possible that people might habituate to a lone and isolated lifestyle. The cause is that having conversation in person inevitably requires verbal chats, unlike typed ones. The more people keep using keyboards to convey their thoughts, the more prone they become to being verbally unsociable. Everyday practices of talking with in person enable people to escape their comfort zone and soothe themselves. Moreover, they are unlikely to know who is behind the scenes since it is easily accessible to manipulate or steal one’s personal account illegally. When they find out with whom they are actually talking, they will become more insecure and terrified, thereby resulting in mistrust in others, even their close ones.
In my opinion, while technology has undoubtedly made it easier for people to communicate across distances, it has also created a barrier to genuine human connection. Although apps like Telegram provide convenience and global access, they cannot fully replace the depth and richness of face-to-face interactions. Over-reliance on digital communication can reduce people’s ability to develop essential social skills, leading to a lack of confidence in real-world interactions.
In conclusion, modern technology has its merits in enhancing communication and bringing people together from different parts of the world. However, it also carries the risk of fostering isolation and diminishing the value of in-person relationships. It is essential for individuals to strike a balance between using technology for communication and engaging in face-to-face interactions to maintain strong social connections.
