Nowadays, education has attracted many people’s attention. Some believe that students should only learn the “important” subjects that are helpful for their performance in the future, hence other subjects such as music and physical education could be eliminated from the curriculum. In my opinion, I do not agree with this statement.
To begin with, I believe that sports, music or art are as important as other compulsory courses that are taught at school. Many people think that when students take music class, all they do are just sing a song or listen to some sheet musics contained in the textbook. However, this belief is not true, the act of teaching music at school also comprise providing comprehensive knowledge of music, namely the development of music through history, or how music influences culture. by obtaining such domain of knowledge, pupils would gain more awareness of preserving intangible values that were handed down through many generations. For example, some high schools in Vietnam has promoted performing “tuồng” stages in order to evoke students’ interest in this form of traditional music that has stood on the edge of extinction, and this campaign has received many positive reactions.
Moreover, subjects like music and sports are some great ways to reduce stress after serious courses such as math and physics. After hours studying subjects that require intensive concentration, a relaxed music class or some exercises help pupils rewind and recharge their energy. In addition, exercising not only encourage the brain to produce adrenaline and dopamine-which help enhance positivity, but also strengthen muscles, especially when students do not have time to work out at home, then physical education at school is really important, both for their mental and physical health.
To conclude, I do not agree with the statement that pupils should not learn some “unimportant” subjects like music and sports at school because of the aforementioned positive influences that they can exert on students.
