Nowadays people often argue about importance of studying only subjects that are beneficial to pupils’ future careers, while some other subjects like music and sports should be taken away from curriculum. I totally disagree with that statement. I think students must have more balanced life if they want to feel fulfilled and motivated. This essay will explain why having subjects out your major can be more effective and sustainable in long term.
To begin with, it’s scientifically proven that students with balanced schedule feel less stressed and burned out. For example, if student has time for sports or creative activities, he or she can switch their focus and get more energy for next necessary classes. Life should consist of both duties and passions — the latter being essential for lasting inner strength. In other words, emotional health is an important part of human being as well, and ignoring it because of only following your career path can make performance worse.
Furthermore, many soft skills and ability to think critically are not developed inside one sphere of studies. In real life, individuals need not only knowledge about their job, but also teamwork, flexibility, communication skills and so on. These skills are often learned through trying yourself in different areas in that you don’t get used to be. If student just do math and physics (for becoming an engineer), probably they will not be ready for adult life that demands everyone to be open-minded and versatile.
On the other hand, of course, it’s true that such unnecessary school subjects may distract pupils from their main goal, but focusing only on subjects for your success makes education boring and monotonous. Success is not only about being strong in your major but also about the ability to handle situations in different areas.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that students should not study only about their future work. Over-focus on subjects for career is not the answer if we want new generation to be versatile and successful at the same time.
