While some people believe that students should study only technology or engineering-related subjects that will be valuable for their future careers, others argue that students should focus on subjects they are genuinely interested in. I firmly support the idea that students should have the autonomy to choose their subjects, and I will discuss both perspectives.
In general, we often observe that children grow up with particular talents or interests in specific areas. If a child has the opportunity to study a subject they are passionate about, where they can leverage their extraordinary talent, they are likely to perform better compared to subjects that do not interest them. This is evident in the accomplishments of many renowned scientists who have made groundbreaking discoveries in their chosen fields. For instance, Nikola Tesla famously told his father that if he could not study electrical engineering, he would quit his education altogether. We now recognize the groundbreaking achievements he made in the field of electricity because he was able to pursue his passion.
On the other hand, forcing students to only study technology or engineering subjects can negatively impact the performance of those who lack interest in these areas. For example, each year, many students enroll in programs for electrical or computer science without a clear understanding of the subject matter. A year later, they struggle with foundational courses in coding and electrical circuits. Consequently, this approach has led to the production of numerous unskilled engineers, contributing to an increased unemployment rate among graduates.
In summary, each individual possesses inherent knowledge or skills in a specific subject or field from a young age. Therefore, I strongly believe that giving students the freedom to independently choose their subjects will not only help them become specialists in their fields but also contribute to reducing the unemployment rate.
