In modern society, people say that the gap between the older and younger generations is generally too broad to make two generations have a mutual understanding. From my perspective, I agree that some aspects nowadays separate the elderly and younger individuals from understanding each other.
It can be argued that social norms are one of the main reasons for the generation gap. The changing of social norms impacts society significantly, which causes communication breakdowns. If two sides cannot come to a mutual understanding, then teens are likely to enter a rebellious phase due to unclear communication. For instance, etiquette in the present has changed over time. In the past, students would greet their teachers to show signs of respect towards them. In the present however, most students walk into class without greeting their teachers because of smartphones.
Furthermore, traditional values also triggered generational divides, likely because younger generations may view them unnecessary or a restriction from freedom. Traditional values were passed down for a long period of time, making the elderly believe that they are essential. However, this causes youngsters to reject the values due to pressure or a rebellious act, which can turn out to be disrespectful in many cases. For instance, some families carry cultural beliefs to protect them from evil spirits, although this may be a form of affection and protection. Teens may view these beliefs to be old-fashioned or suffocating.
In conclusion, I believe that the generational gap between two generations is caused by the shifting of social norms and traditional values in families. Despite these drawbacks, with mutual understanding, the relationship can rise positively because two sides are open.
